Whether you are doing a family history project, or you are professional genealogist, these genealogy newspapers are critical for researchers. Below are my top 5 genealogy newspapers (in no particular order), because they helped me greatly as I went about discovering my family tree and assisting others with their ancestors.

Genealogy Bank has among the largest of collections of digitized U.S. newspapers from all states, dating back to 1690. It is US based only, and provides data on over 260 million obituaries. It provides other records that include the Social Security Death Index, government publications, and historical books. Genealogy Bank’s collection covers more than 13,000 newspapers, with an outstanding 95 percent exclusive to this newspaper website only. Genealogy Bank like I mentioned, requires a subscription fee and gives a trial or discount upon signing up.

Newspapers.com is also one of the largest newspaper databases. It is associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 700 million newspaper pages to explore from more than 3,000 newspapers. They mostly cover the United States newspapers. However, unlike genealogy bank they include some newspapers from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Panama. As noted, there is a subscription fee. However, click on this link for a FREE 7-day trial.

This genealogy newspaper website is provided by the Library of Congress and is free to use. Included on this site is America’s historic newspaper pages from 1777-1963. There is also the U.S. Newspaper Directory to assist with details about American newspapers published between 1690-present. It is an open access, open sources newspaper effort.

Newspaper Archive is a website of digitized newspapers that claims to be the world’s largest newspaper archive with over 2 billion news articles, with coverage extending from 1607 to the present. It is unique from the other newspaper websites because it covers not only the United States, but also Canada, the United Kingdom, and 20 other countries. Newspaper Archive offers a free trial to sign up.

Google News Archive is associated with Google News in providing free scanned newspaper archives, or links to other newspaper archives on the web that usually require a fee. Google archives date back to 18th century.
